The beauty of great non-fiction is that the illustrations carry as much info in them as the text does. Young children get so much from just "reading" the pictures. So don't worry if the text seems to be a bit beyond where the Hungry Boy is- he doesn't care!

i posted too soon. just went to the steven jenkins site and realized that he authored our new favorite non-fiction book Deep, Deep, Deep. It's wonderful! A little over my 4yo's head, but not so much so that we don't read it almost every night. he LOVES it and so do i. it's beautiful, i learn tons and there are definitely elements that i can build on in an age appropriate way. can't wait to get more of his books!!!

I would highly recommend many of Steve Jenkins books - they are all animal/science based with neat illustrations for the kids to learn the concepts - check out his website: http://www.stevejenkinsbooks.com/
I think he is one of the most overlooked or unheard of children's authors!
