Whose been stuck inside more than they care to admit lately? Show of hands. Thought so. It's been bruuuuutal here in the BK! Some days the time from school pick-up to dinner feels like an eternity, even with all the tricks I have up my sleeve. What's a mama/papa to do? Keep reading their eensies of course and get your hands on some board games!
Recently, my BMF (
OneHungryMama) and I have discovered the amazing power of the board game. Whip one out and suddenly you've kept everyone happy, occupied and maybe even a little bit better off than before, if you pick your games carefully. Check out my recommendations below and toss a few in your amazon cart ASAP. You wont be sorry!
For the bean it all started with THE BEST FIRST GAME EVER-
Snail's Pace Race Game
(yes, it's all caps worthy). I was first introduced to this game by another teacher when I was teaching kindergarten. It's perfect for board game beginners because it's simple as simple can be AND it completely takes away any trace of competition from game playing. When you're trying to keep the peace in a classroom of 25 five year-olds that's huge! Turns out it's really great for 4 year olds on a playdate too, LOL.
If you want bang for your buck, then
Four First Games
by
Ravensburger is the one for you. It's a wonderful compendium of 4 color-matching, dice games that will provide you and your kiddo with hours of fun. Simple rules, short duration of play time (per game) and beautiful, bright gameboard illustrations make this set perfect for young children ages 3-6.

Orchard
is another board game you must have in your arsenal. As OneHungryMama points out, "the beauty of this game is that it manages to be competitive without undermining collaboration and team spirit." Check out her in-depth
review and I'm sure you'll be convinced.
Dirty little secret alert: watching your kiddo play
Charades
is hysterical! So this one is not a board game, but I had to include it because it's sooo much fun. And these colorfully illustrated cue cards by Haba make the game of charades accessible to kids as young as three and a half.
So, what games do you and your kiddos love to play together?

Ditto on the weather in Cleveland,Ohio. Usually, I just have my 3 year old, but this is day 3 of having my 6 year old home from school as well. His fever only surfaces in the evening, so he's "fine" in the day. Oh, and we only have one car which my husband needs to get to work.
Anyway, I thought of an idea which is working at this very moment!!! Both my boys love their stuffed animals and sometimes name them and come up with stories about them. Today I gave them a challenge to write each animal's name and age on small cards and tie them onto each animal.
I had given them scrap paper from our over abundant supply with holes punched out as well as string for them to cut and a piece of guide string for a suggestion of length.
After they are done or tired of this part, I will have them put the animals in order from youngest to oldest. My six year old can do math problems as to how much older or younger one animal is than another one. So far this has consumed 1 hour of time as well as practiced fine motor, writing and collaboration skills.
Love it! Sorting stuffed animals is also really fun. You could also play "Guess My Rule" with them. Have fun and hopefully the day will pass and your big kiddo will be back at school soon. Thank you so much for sharing!
Anyone else care to share?
Thanks for the shout out BMF! I love charades. The best part is that my Hungry Boy -- who looovvveeess to talk -- seriously cannot keep his mouth shut while playing. It's hysterical to watch. The little kids really show their true colors when they play charades. It's great!
I love the idea of having my kids play charades. I would have never thought of that for them (they are 4 & 5), but I guess they are probably not too young.
My kids pretty much take any game and make it into something else.
@Lettie I love that kids make everything their own!
