Take a Hike (weensie alert)

Fall is THE best time for a nature walk. All you need to do is head outside with your mini and start observing. There's so much all around us to see and explore like the changing leaves and all the acorns and seedpods covering the ground. As you stroll around, encourage your little to use all five of their senses: sight, smell, feeling, taste and hearing. If you want to, ask a few questions or share some of your observations. What are the colors of fall? I love the crispness in the air!

Young children are natural collectors and love to bring home little treasures from their explorations. Why not bring a bag to collect and protect their finds? The other day when my little bean went on a nature walk with her grandma she brought home some fabulous looking seed pods that she was really excited to show me. We decided we'd keep one of the pods on our nature table and open the other one up. A was delighted to open up one of her "shakers" and examine the seeds that were hidden deep inside. Immediately she noticed that the seeds were small and brown just like the outside pod, "look mama, two browns!" This simple, impromptu activity led to lots of rich conversation and we were honing her observation skills to boot! So get out there and start collecting! Let us know what you find.

My son found these seed pods, too. They're so cool. But we couldn't figure out what the name of the tree was.

I think it's a Honey Locust? But I'm no tree scientist, LOL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_locust
