Ready, Set, Read

I know we've said it before, and I know we'll say it again, but the best way to get children excited about reading is to read WITH them. Educationally speaking, the benefits are endless and it's a really nice way to bond! Many of you have established a Family Game Night, why not Family Reading Night?

To start, everyone picks out something to read. Don't be overly concerned about what you pick- magazines or newspapers are just as valid as a novel, but computers don't count. And don't be concerned if your child picks materials that are easier than their school reading books- this isn't the time for direct teaching. And, FYI, practice with easy books improves reading fluency. Now, relax and enjoy while everyone reads their selections. Voila!

The simple act of just establishing a night like this for your fam shows that you love to read and that's contagious. Why not make this a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly event in your house?

We always take a read aloud book on vacations. Among my all time favorite memories is reading my family to sleep every night in Costa Rica with All Creatures Great and Small.
