As I was checking on the train schedule for heading to the beach tomorrow (yippee!), a “teachable moment” (those naturally occurring moments in life when you can teach your little something that will have a strong impact) hit me on the head. If I were bringing the kiddos from my class with me, we would take a minute to look at the train times together. We'd figure out the time between each train and how long it would take us to arrive at our destination. Then, once at the train station I’d be sure to grab a train route schedule. We could count how many stops until ours, look for the station names with the most vowels or most syllables. Sound fun and easy? You bet! If train travel is not in your future, but a drive to your destination near or far is you can engage the kiddo in the same kind of math fun. Print out your route on mapquest and have your little check off when you’ve completed each part of the drive. Bonus- keeping the little ones busy while getting where you’re going will cut down on the number of “are we there yets???”

There is also a fun book that illustrates this concept called "Are We There Yet, Daddy?" by Virginia Walters.
That sounds good, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
