Yeah, school’s out! Great news, but what about the piles and piles of paper your child’s teacher neatly (or not so neatly) packed up and sent home? Is it still sitting in a corner waiting to be tackled? Thought so! Instead of letting it overwhelm you, take a minute to make a plan of action. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Decide on your storage system and have it ready to go before you dig in. Some options I like are a binder, a magazine holder or an archival box
- Label the system appropriately – child’s name (particularly important if you have more than one), name of their school and teacher, grade level and school year (9/08-6/09). This might also be a good place to glue that class photo that’s been hanging on the fridge all year.
- Involve your kiddo! Ask them to choose one or two of their best pieces from each subject or from each topic within a subject (i.e. their best subtraction work, favorite nonfiction piece of writing, etc.)
- If the pile is humongous- make a plan to simply tackle one subject per day. Start with Math on Monday?
Any organizers out there who already have a fab system for handling all the schoolwork that comes home? We’d love to hear about it!

I have a box and I weed throughout the school year (which surprises me as disorganized as I am in other areas) as things come home from preschool. The idea of keeping a box for each year labeled with the teacher and grade is great.
Good point Kim, it's a much more manageable task when you're tackling it all along throughout the year.
I am so glad you discussed this issue. My daughter came home with so much stuff that her teacher had to help her carry it all out. She also got some gifts from Teachers (books and stuff) I usually stuff it all in my daughter's backpack and hide it in the ever growing closet! :P But I'm going to vow to be more organized this year about it and weed through it. Thanks for the tips!
