All teachers have their tried and true beginning of the year books. Mine are always all out on display the very first day and read one by one throughout the month of September. Some I select to help ease the transition back to school and acknowledge everyone’s anxiety (yes, even teachers are nervous for the new year). Others I choose to set the tone for the year or to help create a space of acceptance and understanding in the classroom. So I got to thinkin' last night, once the babe was in dreamland, what are some books I would suggest parents read at home during this time of the year...
The Kissing Hand
When Chester the raccoon is reluctant to go to kindergarten for the first time, his mother teaches him a secret way to carry her love with him. A wonderful story that’s perfect for helping children (and parents) cope with separation anxiety.
Will I Have a Friend?
This one's a real classic! At first it’s hard for Jim to find a friend, but during nap time that all changes when he discovers someone who feels the way he does. This sweet, gentle story has been reassuring children for years.
I Am Too Absolutely Small for School
It's not that Lola is nervous about starting school; it's just that she’s too small and too busy to go to school. This is the perfect starting-school book for the doesn't-want-to-admit-I’m-nervous kiddo.
School Bus
This simple picture book follows school buses as they take children to school and bring them home again (safe and sound). A great way to open up conversation about first-time riding the school bus fears.
